Overview

More than a research institute.

ISTA sits on a green campus on the edge of Klosterneuburg, on the Danube, fifteen minutes from central Vienna. It's home to more than 1,400 scientists from over 80 nations — and it's designed to be open to its neighbours.

Come for a public lecture, a family science day, a guided tour, or a visit to the VISTA Science Centre. Most public programming is in German, with English options throughout the year.

Since 2009

A young institute, growing fast.

    ISTA is founded near Vienna as an independent institute for basic research.

  2. 2016

    The Graduate School passes 200 PhD students from across the world.

  3. 2021

    VISTA Science Centre opens to bring science to the public.

  4. 2026

    On track for 90 research groups — up from 73 today.

Frequently asked

Is the campus open to the public every day?
The outdoor campus and café are open daily. Labs and buildings are accessible during public events, guided tours, and by appointment. Open Campus (once a year) opens everything.
Do I need to book a tour in advance?
Yes — guided and school-group tours run on request. Email tours@ista.ac.at at least two weeks ahead. Public-event tours are first-come, first-served with free registration.
Is the campus accessible?
The campus is step-free with accessible parking, lifts and rest areas. ÖGS/BSL interpretation and assistance are available for events on request.
In which languages are events held?
Public programming is mostly in German, with selected sessions and lab tours in English. Each event page states its language.
Can I visit the VISTA Science Centre separately?
Yes. VISTA has its own opening hours and family programme. See the VISTA pages for tickets and current exhibitions.
